Sharon Sutton
Coordinator of Technology and Outreach
Seeds University Elementary School, UCLADr. Sharon Sutton has been an educator for 28 years. She is currently the Coordinator of Technology and Outreach at the Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School (UES), the laboratory school of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. Dr. Sutton also taught in the Vista Unified and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School Districts. During her tenure at UES, she has led the school to national prominence for it's model use of technology in a student-centered learning environment. In 1999, Seeds University Elementary School was recognized as one of five Featured Schools in the nation by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) for the integration of technology into classroom instruction.
From 1989 to 1993, Dr. Sutton was Supervisor of Teacher Education in the Teacher Education Laboratory of the Graduate School of Education, UCLA. During that time she taught Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Psychology, and directed over 120 pre-service multiple subject candidates in their field experiences.
Dr. Sutton has a doctorate in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University. She received her Bachelor of Arts from UCLA and a Master of Science in Educational Computing, also from Pepperdine University. In addition to her degrees, Dr. Sutton has a General Elementary Life Teaching Credential and a and Language Development Specialist Certificate.
Dr. Sutton has conducted extensive professional development inservice sessions on the integration of technology into instruction. In addition to her professional development work for teachers at Seeds UES, she has worked as an independent consultant with local school districts (Palos Verdes, Santa Monica-Malibu, Los Angeles) and with NCREL. She has also presented to California legislators and at local and national conferences on this topic.
Dr. Sutton's work with NCREL included traveling to Washington, D.C. and Korea to work with Department of Defense teachers on the integration of technology into instruction. In 2000, Dr. Sutton was asked to co-author the Implementation Guide for Department of Defense Schools for the Integration of Technology into Instruction.
Dr. Sutton was project leader of a team of teachers from Seeds UES and Santa Monica Unified that developed an information literacy curriculum that serves as the foundation for project-based learning. This Managing Information in the Digital Age has become the basis of the Creating a Thinking Curriculum Institute presently being piloted with administrators and teachers from three elementary schools in Local District D of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Focused on developing information literacy and the integration of technology into the curriculum, the institute is designed to develop the foundation skills necessary for successful project-based/inquiry -based learning.
